British Artist Banksy Pays Tribute to Medical Workers on the COVID-19 Frontline

Banksy Drops Off Superhero Nurse ArtworkBritish graffiti artist Banksy paid a tribute to the medical and para-medical staff battling the COVID-19 pandemic from the frontlines. The artist has a touching job description for nurses, calling them superheroes. He then donated the artwork to England’s Southampton General Hospital.

The painting titled ‘Game Changer’ features a boy playing with his superhero action figures. The most prominent one being a nurse. Besides the signature mask and apron bearing the Red Cross symbol, of a nurse Banksy took the liberty to add the superhero’s cape fluttering behind her. She outranked Batman and Spiderman, on the child’s favourites.

These real-life heroes out to outrank caped crusaders, that wouldn’t stand a chance against the viral COVID-19 pandemic the world’s healthcare professionals are up against. This really is a game changer in terms of the type of heroes our children look up to

Banksy’s artwork is known to feature political commentary and stir debate, but this piece has left many speechless. While paintings are not usually Banksy’s go-to creative canvas, perhaps he chose to paint this because he intended to donate it to a hospital.

He even left a note with the special delivery, saying:

“Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if its only black and white.”

Southampton General Hospital has proudly put up the artwork near the emergency department.

Southampton General Hospital is the largest in the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust system. Some of their COVID-19 researchers are starting vaccine trials. The painting will later be sold to raise money for the NHS. Till then it’s spreading smiles on the faces of healthcare workers at the hospital.
